What It Takes To Be An Entrepreneur

We are often asked what it takes to be an entrepreneur.

Rather than answer the question directly, we thought we'd take a different approach and show you a true story that came from a real entrepreneur:

A family friend made an introduction.

I drove 5 hours from Raleigh to Washington DC to meet him.

Four times.

First time, I got a text from him saying his son was not well—

Second time, he himself was feeling sick—

Third time, he had urgent business—

Just as I was pulling up to his office.

And each and every time, I texted him saying thank you, turned my car around, and made the 5-hour trip back.

Number four was lucky.

“You made good time from Raleigh,” his secretary said.

He froze. “You’ve been coming from North Carolina all this time?!”

“Yes Sir,” I said. “But it’s my pleasure, really.”

I opened the pitch deck and started talking about [XYZ company], a startup I co-founded that helps nonprofits tap into the $500M+ potential of Facebook fundraisers.

“You know what,” he said, “forget about it.”

“What?!”

“I’m investing.”

I couldn’t speak.

“With that kind of persistence, I’m sure it’ll work out.”

He put in $100K+.

And I hear from him only once a year.

You don’t have to be the smartest person in the room.

Nor the most qualified.

Nor the most talented.

You just have to show up again.

And again.

And again.

Until you make it.
